3 Days in Saugatuck with Kids: Our Favorite First-Timer Family Itinerary

Enjoy family time with ice cream in downtown Saugatuck

Planning your first family trip to Saugatuck? Start here.

Saugatuck is the kind of place that makes family trips feel easy: beach mornings, walkable downtown streets, dune rides, ice cream stops, good coffee, and plenty of room to slow down.

This itinerary is our favorite way to spend a first trip here with kids. It is not packed from sunrise to bedtime. That is intentional.

Our best advice? Pick one “main thing” each day, leave space for naps or downtime, and always say yes to ice cream.

Day 1: Arrive, wander downtown, and make it feel like vacation

Afternoon: Check in and settle in

After the drive, keep things simple. Unpack, let the kids check out the house, get groceries put away, and take a breath.

If you are traveling with grandparents, cousins, or another family, this is the time to figure out bedrooms, snacks, beach bags, and the basic plan for tomorrow.

No need to rush. You are here.

Early evening: Walk downtown Saugatuck

Downtown Saugatuck is the perfect first stop. It is charming, easy to walk, and gives everyone that “we’re on vacation” feeling right away.

Keep it casual:

  • Walk by the water

  • Pop into a few shops

  • Let the kids pick a treat

  • Grab dinner

  • End with ice cream

Dinner options for night one

Option 1: The Southerner
A great first-night dinner if your crew is hungry after the drive. Think comfort food, biscuits, fried chicken, and a relaxed Saugatuck feel.

Option 2: Pennyroyal Café & Provisions
A good choice if you want something fresh, seasonal, and a little more polished without making the night feel too formal.

Ice cream after dinner

This is not optional in our book.

Local tip: Do ice cream the first night. It sets the tone for the whole trip.

Day 2: Oval Beach, downtime, and dune rides

Morning: Go to Oval Beach

Start your first full day at Oval Beach. It is the classic Saugatuck beach day: Lake Michigan, soft sand, dunes, swimming, beach walks, and gorgeous views.

Go earlier if you can. Parking is easier, the beach feels calmer, and kids usually have the most energy in the morning.

Pack:

  • Sunscreen

  • Towels

  • Water bottles

  • Snacks

  • Beach toys

  • Shade umbrella or tent

  • Dry clothes

Then keep the plan simple: swim, dig, snack, repeat.

Lunch: Keep it easy

After the beach, do not overthink lunch.

Head back to the house for sandwiches and showers, or pick up something simple if everyone is still in a good mood. A regular stop for us is the Root Beer Barrel, which is on the way back.

This is also a great time for naps, quiet time, reading, porch sitting, or letting kids play while adults regroup.

Late afternoon: Saugatuck Dune Rides

For the big family adventure, book Saugatuck Dune Rides.

It is fun, scenic, a little bumpy, and just the right length for kids. The ride is about 40 minutes, which makes it easy to fit into the day without wearing everyone out.

Local tip: Always book ahead. Popular times can fill up.

Dinner options for the easy takeout night

After a beach-and-dunes day, we usually recommend takeout or something very casual. This is not the night to ask tired kids to sit nicely for a long dinner.

Option 1: Wicks Park Bar & Grille
A casual downtown favorite with lake perch, burgers, fish tacos, pasta, gumbo, and a relaxed atmosphere. Great when you want something easy and satisfying.

Option 2: The Farmhouse Deli & Pantry
Perfect for sandwiches, salads, soups, deli case favorites, baked goods, coffee, and picnic-style food. This is a great grab-and-go option for families.

Take it back to the house, let kids eat in pajamas if needed, and call it a win.

Optional sunset

If everyone still has energy, head back toward Lake Michigan for sunset.

If not? Stay in. Play board games or cornhole. Watch a movie. That counts too.

Day 3: Coffee, shopping, one more adventure, and a big night out

Morning: Coffee downtown

Start with Uncommon Coffee Roasters in downtown Saugatuck.

It is one of our favorite first stops for coffee, baked goods, breakfast/lunch options, and a slow morning walk around town.

If your kids are early risers, this is a nice way to get out of the house without launching into a full activity right away.

Mid-morning: Choose your family’s speed

Pick one based on the mood of your group.

Option A: Downtown shops and galleries
Best for a slower morning, local gifts, and a little wandering.

Option B: Create your own art

Go to Express Yourself Art Barn, and create your own art! Great small projects for families of all ages.

Option C: Playground
Best for younger kids who need to move. Check out our blog post on playgrounds here.

Lunch: Simple is best

By day three, you will know your crew. If everyone is still going strong, eat downtown. If kids are tired, pick up lunch and head back for a reset.

A little downtime before dinner makes the evening much more enjoyable.

Dinner options for the big night out

For your final night, plan one nicer dinner. It gives the trip a little “special occasion” feeling without making every meal a production.

Option 1: Everyday People Café
This is our pick for the big night out. EPC is in Douglas and has a warm, lively, grown-up feel while still being approachable. Best for families with older kids, grandparents, or groups who want a memorable final dinner.

Option 2: Pennyroyal Café & Provisions
Another excellent choice for a fresh, seasonal dinner in a beautiful setting. Good if you want something thoughtful and local but still comfortable.

Local tip: For your nicer dinner, check hours and reservations before your trip, especially in summer and on weekends.

Final treat: One more scoop

End with one last ice cream stop, at Kilwins or Dairy Dayz, even if you already went on night one.

A few parent-tested Saugatuck tips

Do the beach early

Oval Beach is wonderful, but earlier is easier with kids. You will have better parking luck, happier energy, and less afternoon heat.

Plan downtime like it is an activity

The best family trips are not packed all day long. A midday break can save the whole evening.

Keep one dinner very easy

That is why we like Wicks Park or Farmhouse Deli for the takeout/casual night. Everyone gets fed, and no one has to rally too hard.

Book the dune ride ahead

Saugatuck Dune Rides is popular for a reason. If it is a must-do for your family, reserve it early.

Always have a rain plan

Rain does not ruin a Saugatuck trip. It just changes the day. Coffee, shops, galleries, games at the house, long lunches, and cozy movie nights all work well here.

Where to stay with kids in Saugatuck

For a family trip, your home base matters. Pretty photos are great, but practical comfort is what makes the trip feel easy.
