If you've found this page, you're probably trying to decide between our two homes — and that's a good problem to have. Saugatuck and Douglas sit on opposite banks of the Kalamazoo River, connected by a quick bridge crossing, but they have genuinely different personalities. After ten-plus years hosting in both towns, here's how I'd actually help you choose.

Saugatuck — The Livelier Side of the River

Saugatuck is the town most people picture when they think "Lake Michigan getaway." Downtown is full of galleries, ice cream shops, and restaurants you can walk to without thinking twice about parking. The Saugatuck Modern Farmhouse sits a 5-minute walk from all of it, and a 9-min drive from Oval Beach.

It's a 6 bed / 4.5 bath home with 4,500 square feet — plenty of room to spread out — but it's the location that defines the Saugatuck experience. You wake up, you walk to coffee, you walk to dinner, and the town does a lot of the entertaining for you.

Saugatuck is the better fit if you're:

  • Visiting for the first time and want to be in the middle of things

  • Traveling with a group that wants to walk to restaurants and nightlife rather than drive

  • Bringing kids or teens who'll want options within a short walk

  • Looking for that classic, bustling small-town summer feel

Douglas — The Quieter Side of the River

Douglas is Saugatuck's quieter neighbor — same river, same lake access, completely different pace. The Douglas Modern Villa is a 2-minute walk to downtown Douglas (smaller and slower than Saugatuck's), and about 7 minutes by car to Oval Beach.

What the Villa has that nothing in Saugatuck does: a rooftop deck with water views over Kalamazoo Lake. At 4,000 square feet with 6 beds and 4.5 baths, it's built for groups who want a private home base more than a downtown crawl — a gourmet kitchen, a game room with pool table, foosball, and darts, and a backyard built around a fire pit and grills.

Douglas is the better fit if you're:

  • Prioritizing a private, residential feel over downtown proximity

  • Traveling with grandparents or anyone who'd rather skip stairs and crowds

  • Planning a golf trip or a group that wants to come home to a quiet house at the end of the day

  • A multigenerational group that wants everyone in one home with space to actually relax together

Which One Is Right for You?

A few real scenarios that might sound familiar:

"We're bringing grandma and grandpa and don't want anyone climbing hills or navigating crowds." Go with Douglas. Quieter streets, a short flat walk to town, and a home base that doesn't ask much of anyone.

"We want to walk to dinner and explore without getting in the car." Saugatuck. You're a few minutes from everything on foot.

"It's a guys' or girls' trip and we want a private spot to hang out at night." Either works, but Douglas's roof deck and fire pit edge it out for an evening-focused group.

"We're planning a golf trip." Douglas tends to be the pick here — quieter mornings, a private place to unwind after a round, slightly easier access to the golf courses

"It's our first time in the area and we want to be in the thick of it." Saugatuck, hands down.

Still not sure? Both homes are a short drive from each other, so plenty of guests staying at one walk or drive over to explore the other town during their visit. You're not really choosing between two different vacations — just two different home bases for the same Lake Michigan trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Saugatuck and Douglas the same place? No — they're two distinct towns connected by a bridge over the Kalamazoo River. Saugatuck is the busier, more walkable downtown; Douglas is quieter and more residential, but still has restaurants and galleries a short walk away. The two towns are just minutes away.

Which town is closer to Oval Beach? Both are close. The Saugatuck Modern Farmhouse is 9 minutes drive from Oval Beach, and the Douglas Modern Villa is about 7 minutes by car.

Can I walk between Saugatuck and Douglas? It's possible but not a casual stroll — most guests drive or bike between the two towns when visiting both during their stay.

Which home is better for a large multigenerational group? Both sleep large groups comfortably (12 at the Farmhouse, 15 at the Villa), but Douglas's layout and quieter setting tend to work better for groups with a wide age range, especially if anyone in the group prefers less stair-climbing or downtown noise. Three of the bedrooms at Douglas are at the ground floor level.
